The PAC 10 effect

Many will read this and lend no credibility to what I have to say and that is fine. I am not Lee Corso (thank God), I am not Kirk Herbstreit (does anyone even remember when he was OSU's quarterback?) and I am not Chris Fowler (how does he sit at the same table with those two and be able to sleep at night?). But, I can give a consistent outlook on each weeks outcomes and determine whom I believe is truly the best team in the nation.

I will say, however, that if USC does not pull it together (based on their week 1 performance against Idaho) they will not finish as the top team in the nation and my pick is that they WILL NOT FINISH AS THE TOP TEAM IN THE PAC 10. John David Booty gets all the hype as being a Heisman candidate. Jusifyibly so, the last two USC starting quarterbacks have finished their careers with one golden stiff arm on their coffee tables. However, we should not lend to this hype when there are quarterbacks around the country that are better than Booty. Here I rate the top QB's in the nation:

1. Brian Brohm, Louisville
2. Colt Brennan, Hawaii
3. Matt Ryan, Boston College
4. Colt McCoy, Texas
5. Nate Longshore, Cal
6. John David Booty, USC
7. Sam Keller, Nebraska
8. Chase Holbrook, New Mexico State
9. Chase Daniel, Missouri
10. Stephen McGee, Texas A&M

As you can see, Booty is not even listed as my top quarterback in the PAC 10. So, judging by my list, he should not be considered a heisman candidate. If you believe in my predictions (83% winning percentage as of today), Botty is getting way too much hype.

Here is my prediction as to how the PAC 10 will unfold:

1. UCLA
2. Cal
3. USC
4. Washington
5. Arizona State
6. Oregon
7. Washington State
8. Oregon State
9. Arizona
10. Stanford

Let's be careful not to jump to too many conclusions about USC too early in the season. On Colin Cowherds radio program on ESPN Radio, Pete Carrol said that this years team is the "deepest" team that he has had. If you ask me, that is coach-speak for "weakest" team that he has had. Their depth might only be because all of their young players are at the same ability level. Look for USC to flake out this year and be back on the rise next year. Look for Arizona State to surprise some people and for Oregon State to surprise no one.
